Join the upcoming Virtual Undergraduate Town Hall Event with Yunshu Du on July 27

Yunshu will be hosting a webinar for the CRA-W Virtual Undergraduate Town Hall (VUTH) series on July 27 at 1 pm (PDT). The idea of the VUTH is to have a speaker present an introduction to their research area and a few results, and then have the speaker present on a mentoring topic that’s suitable for undergraduate students and encourage them to get involved.

Yunshu will present her research on “Speeding up Deep Reinforcement Learning via Transfer and Multitask Learning”, and organize a mentor topic on “How to Choose a Research Direction as an Undergraduate”. This is a great opportunity for undergraduate students to get useful information from a Ph.D. student, who is closer to career stage to them.

2017 JCATI Symposium

Viresh Duvvuri, Joo Heon, and Dr. Matthew E. Taylor presented a poster on “Baton: A Low-Cost Aerial Delivery Vehicle” at the 2017 JCATI Symposium, held at the University of Washington.

The Joint Center for Aerospace Technology Innovation (JCATI) is an initiative to stimulate aerospace economic development and job creation in Washington State by funding collaborations between the aerospace industry and academic researchers at the State’s public 4-year institutions of higher education.

At the annual symposium, students, researchers, and industry partners working on JCATI-funded projects meet to share and discuss the progress made on their respective projects. The symposium highlights current JCATI projects, expert aerospace speakers, a student “elevator speech” competition, and a poster session. This unique forum draws attendees from academia, government, industry, and non-profits engaged in Washington aerospace.

Yunshu Du placed 2nd in GPSA Research Exposition 2017


Yunshu Du‘s research on Data Mining the Cougarcard for Student Fitness, ranked 2nd in the “Administrative & Information Systems” category during the 2017 Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) Research Exposition held last Friday. The competition only accepted 55% of submitted abstracts, and only 15% of the presenters are receiving awards. Yunshu will receive a scholarship money and will be awarded a plaque at the GPSA Excellence Awards Luncheon on Monday, April 17th.

2017 GPSA Research Exposition


IRL Lab members Bei Peng, Yunshu Du and Shivam Goel presented their research work in the 2017 Graduate & Professional Student Association (GPSA) Research Exposition held at the Compton Union Building, Senior Ballroom on March 31, 2017. During the research exposition, Shivam Goel had a rare opportunity of presenting his research to President Kirk Schulz.

The GPSA Research Exposition is an opportunity for WSU graduate and professional students to showcase their research work that allows networking with fellow WSU graduate student, professors, researchers, and industry representatives as well as to the general public.

Congratulations to IRL Lab’s 1st PhD

Yusen Zhan successfully defended his PhD Dissertation, “Policy Advice, Non-convex and Distributed Optimization in Reinforcement Learning,” on November 8th. He is the first PhD graduate from the IRL Lab, with multiple journal articles and a conference paper accepted at the time of his defense. We all wish him the best as he prepares to return to China to begin a new job!
